Jennifer Staten
Marriage and Family Therapist & Certified Play Therapist, LMFT, CPTAbout Jennifer Staten
Jennifer is a play therapist who has worked in the mental health field for nearly two years. She grew up in Western Maryland and moved to Eastern Maryland in 2016. Jennifer has worked with children in various roles since her early teens, experiences that deepened her understanding of children's unique ways of communicating and helped shape her decision to pursue a career in play therapy. In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and traveling.
From a young age, Jennifer was naturally drawn to working with children and found it easy to connect with them. Even as a child, she knew she wanted to work with young children. Her approach to play therapy is grounded in the belief that play is a child’s natural language and one of their primary ways of communicating thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through play, children can express themselves, process difficult emotions and life experiences, build resilience, and move toward healing and growth.
Training & Education
Jennifer is a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). She earned her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, specializing in Child and Adolescent Family Therapy in 2021. She earned her Graduate Certificate in Play Therapy from Capella University in June 2025 and is currently working toward becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) under the supervision of a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. She has nearly two years of experience in the mental health field, including outpatient mental health settings. Jennifer has specialized training in play therapy and values lifelong learning, continually seeking opportunities to deepen her knowledge and enhance the care she provides to children and families.
Therapeutic Approach
Using a solution-focused and child-centered play therapy approach, Jennifer tailors treatment to each child’s unique needs, allowing them to lead the therapeutic process through play while building upon their strengths, resilience, and natural capacity for growth. When appropriate, she thoughtfully incorporates more directive interventions to support specific therapeutic goals and foster meaningful progress. Her work is grounded in trauma-informed care and an understanding that play therapy can help children process difficult experiences, build resilience, and move toward healing and growth.
